BOBOTIE

Today let's go around South Africa. Every time it is not possible for everyone to go and visit South Africa but we can taste the national dish of South Africa and enjoy the flavour of the place. So let's have a look.

                              Ingredients

  • Bread slices tear up unevenly
  • Milk- 1/2 cup
  • Chopped onion
  • Oil- 3tbsp
  • Curry powder
  • Turmeric powder
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Sugar
  • Grated apple
  • Lemon zest
  • Lamb- 300gm
  • Apricot jam
  • Egg- 1
  • Almonds (peeled off)
                             Procedure

  1. In a bowl add tear up bread slice and milk, keep it aside
  2. Heat oil in a pan
  3. Fry onion in medium flame until it turn golden brown
  4. Add curry powder and termaric powder
  5. Stir and mix all the spices, add little oil if they stick
  6. Add tomatoes, sugar, grated apple, lemon zest and stir through. Fry for a minute then add meat
  7. Add the apricot jam and stir so that it melts with the meat, add salt
  8. When the meat is sort of medium done remove the pot from heat, stir through and allow it to cool a little
  9. Add the Milky crumbs of the bread to the meat add mix through
  10. Break a egg in bowl, whisk and add the milk. Add the egg-milk mixture to the meat
  11. Turn into a greased oven dish and stud with almond on the top. Bake for 40 minutes in a preheated oven
  12. Whisk the last egg with the milk and enough turmeric to give a yellow colour to the mixture. Take the meat out of the oven pour over the custard and bake for another 15 minutes.
  13. Bobotie is ready serve hot with yellow rice.

Usually bobotie is preparation of lamb but it can also be made with chicken which is easily available everywhere.
